1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa
This classily specced 911 SC Targa available in Singapore, was delivered new on October 1981 to Jones’ Garage Five Oaks, the only official Porsche Dealership in the country, Jersey. it lived its first 60,000 KMs on the small island of Jersey under two ownerships. The car was then shipped out to South Africa in 1989 where it lived most of its life before being exported to Singapore in 2022 by AutoIcons.
This SC Targa was delivered new in Wine Red Metallic, an intriguing deep burgundy colour that treads between red and purple under different lighting conditions. The paint is in excellent condition as it was restored in South Africa. The exterior also features the iconic Fuchs-style wheels finished in black with a Porsche 930 Turbo ‘Tea-Tray’ wing.
To contrast the deep, rich paint was a bright and luxurious beige interior. Most of which are still original including the door cards and the rear seats. Like the paint, the front two seats were also restored during its time in South Africa, giving it a brand new feel for the driver. The iconic Targa roof was also carefully restored along with the roll bar to meet factory specifications by Porsche South Africa.
Mechanically, it features the robust 3.0 litre naturally-aspirated Flat-6 that was derived from the 930 Turbo making around 180 horsepower and 237 Nm of torque when it was new, paired with the 5-speed 915 gearbox. This particular SC Targa was also regularly serviced in South Africa by ‘Carrera Motors’ with records and receipts to show. After spending most of its life in South Africa, this was found and delivered to Singapore in 2022 and has been kept under a temperature and humidity-controlled environment in our showroom at AutoIcons.
The idea of the 911SC was originally conceived from the ethos that it would be the final 911. Porsche was struggling financially and wanted to succeed the 911 model with the 924 and 928 models. With larger brakes, a revised suspension system, and a stiffer chassis; the then-new SC was more agile and more responsive than the 911S it succeeded. Making it a fitting endpoint for the 911 model.
However, the 911 still managed to outsell the transaxle cars that were designed to replace it. So the SC became the model that saved the lineage of the 911 model and the rest was history.
As with all air-cooled Porsches, the SC Targas have also been appreciating in value in the past five years.Market trends show that 911 SC Targas prices have been increasing steadily over the past few years, with a 17% market value increase from 2018 to 2023 according to classic.com.
We believe that due to the historical significance of the SC model, paired with the lifestyle qualities of the Targa variant, prices will continue to increase as enthusiasts continue their search for a more engaging experience with their car.
